Halloween 2008- Captain Hammer
The Simplified Spelling Society website makes my eyes bleed. The chick who played Mystique was on the Daily Show recently and mentioned that her mother was a member and had picketed the recent national spelling bee. I was a little curious about the idea but it looks much worse than the alternatives. I like the idea of simpler rules for spelling mostly because then perhaps simple people would be better at it and could tell the difference between "lose" and "loose". (That distinction bothers me much more than "their" v. "they're" because "lose" and "loose" are pronounced completely differently and shouldn't be confusable. Maybe I'm wrong and there are people who pronounce them in the same way like some people pronounce "pin" and "pen" in the same way.) Sadly their rules just make words look even uglier than I would have imagined. I also find the idea of linguists promoting one set of spelling rules as being "better" to be strange, I'd always thought they tended to just describe language and not prescribe or proscribe rules about language.

I think the folks at PacManhattan are much more sane.

It looks kind of Chaucerian to me. Or Chossairean, perhaps.

True, but take care not to confuse "language" and "writing system."
