CNN Headline: Dru Sjodin's mother calls suspect's mom

A similar headline in the strib today used "mom" for both.

I think my personal grammar rules would first say that you should use the same term, not mix the two. Next you should use "mother" instead of "mom" in a newspaper article. Third you should use the more familiar term for the alleged victim, not the alleged perpetrator.

The phrase "calls suspect's mom" makes it sound to me like they were sharing recipes or something.
