Halloween 2008- Captain Hammer

Musical Puppets

Pretty good extended weekend.

Had a nice Thanksgiving meal with monstersocks' family then descended on her grandmother's apartment with desserts (coconut chocolate brownies and mini-blood orange marmalade cheesecakes made by monstersocks).

Friday we finally managed to see The Danger Board in concert. A good show, and the conclusion to nicholay's birthday puzzle quest.

We watched a few movies this weekend. We tried the Netflix/360 thing and watched War Inc. Technically the streaming worked well although it looked blocky at times. Sadly the movie is really terrible. Kickboxing, sport of the future + Ghandi with a southern accent + Britney Spears light + A Different World refugee = not nearly as entertaining as you might expect. Later we watched Strange Brew which was much better (as usual). We also watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall, a quite amusing excuse for a Dracula Puppet Musical. I had a minor plot complaint and it really could have used more puppet musical, but other than that it was good. When you think about it, what couldn't use more puppet musical?

Saturday we went to Meg & Pete's baby shower. Our gifts (a pixel skull onesie & an ugly doll) were well appreciated. It was really nice to re-connect with old college folks. That evening we had lexiphanic and kalmn over to watch Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog (DVD available later this month). They enjoyed it, although kalmn had some reservations.

I've been messing around with the Strib's Recount Page and it's made me disgusted with both campaigns. Maybe 1 in 10 ballots seems like it has any reasonable reason for being challenged, and even then most seem fairly obvious.

The new 15" MacBook Pro is really calling to me now that I figured out a justification for buying one. I've been able to hold off for a while because my current laptop (5 years old) is fast enough for most things. Recently I came up with the idea of moving my iPhoto library onto my laptop so that I could organize and publish pictures while using it instead of being stuck on my desktop machine. The additional storage of the new MacBook Pros (and their easily upgraded hard drives) makes that a nice solution, although I'm somewhat leery of buying a first generation model. (My current laptop was a first generation aluminum PowerBook and developed a screen problem after a while that was covered under AppleCare, but I'd rather just have one that works without a warranty repair.)

Gaming

Lately I've been playing Saint's Row 2 for the 360. I was a bit hesitant to get into the Saint's Row series since it seemed like a cheap GTA rip-off. After playing through the game I'd say it definitely is a GTA rip-off, but they've gone in a much more whimsical (and juvenile) direction than GTA 4. Some of the activities (like Trail Blazing, Mayhem and Fuzz) are pretty fun in their own right, while others aren't much good aside from the benefits they offer. I found the difficulty a little odd (some of the bosses were much tougher than the final boss), especially given how tough some of the final GTA sequences have been (following the helicopter on the boat in GTA 4? Bah.). The checkpoint system is nice since it removes the frustration of having to repeat the easier parts of a major mission over and over if the final bit is tough.
