Halloween 2008- Captain Hammer
Apparently Macalester is considering dropping the Lingustics department. Maybe they wouldn't be having these problems if they'd hired someone interested in sticking around ten years ago.

Yeah, I heard about this from macalester. I can't believe what's going on there.

Must be going around. The U is talking about disolving the College of Human Ecology (my current college) and absorbing the programs into other schools. They are also thinking about axeing the General College, which has caused much more reaction. Argh argh argh.

Or they didn't hire anyone because they wanted to kill the department for years. One advantage/disadvantage of tenure is that you have to find new jobs for profs once their department goes away, like shifting the Comm Studies guys into other departments. One reason Reedy refuses to go gently into the Classics night is because he knows of the plan to merge Classics and Religious Studies. You'll notice that the tenure-track people have backgrounds focused more on the civilization/history aspects than the languages.
