CONvergence 2005 Preacher- Diffuse Glow
Last night monstersocks and I had dinner from Quizno's (the new prime rib sandwich is actually pretty good) and went out to see Ultraviolet. The movie was pretty lousy. Definitely not "so bad it's good", definitely not "enjoyable as long as you don't think", more like "a little potential squandered magnificently". Bad special effects, bad dialog, bad acting and a dopy plot. Every close-up on Milla Jovovich looked like it had been edited by someone who just started using Photoshop about fifteen minutes ago. At first I thought it was some sort of stylistic touch but then realized it was just her. Maybe that's what happens when models hit 30 and the special effects budget is the director's nephew's free time. Much like Mortal Kombat: Annihilation and Gas, Food And Lodging I would like to warn everyone I know to stay far away from this film.

Today monstersocks and I had eriker over for some Harry Potter (I've now seen the first three, monstersocks has seen the first and second) then we went out to Bascali's for dinner. eriker headed out to karaoke afterwards (we'll be more likely to join her once the new smoking ban starts) and we headed home for a few more episodes of Battlestar Galactica. We're getting towards the end of the first season and will need to pick up more DVDs soon.

That's too bad; the trailer looked good. Course it was the sort of thing where you know the movie's going to suck anyway... but I still held out hope.

But BSG rules, of course.

I believe you were sitting behind us. Well, and off to the side a bit. Couldn't agree with you more on the suckitude of that movie.

Oh! I didn't see you. We got there later than we usually do and just tried to find a reasonable seat.

We were in the middle of the row that is even with the entrance and my date having long blonde hair, and me not wearing my glasses. If you heard anyone whispering offhand comments making fun of the movie, that was probably me.

At the end of the movie I thought, "That guy looks kind of like lokey" but I wasn't sure enough to say anything (and I was full of shame about having seen the movie and wasn't sure I wanted other people to know I'd been there anyway).

I'm listening to people's reviews of 'Ultraviolet' and I'm baffled as to why anyone ... well, why anyone would go to see it, but moreover why anyone would go to it with any sense of optimism. The trailers were terrible, the posters and online ads were terrible. "I'm Violet, and on March 3rd, they're going to pay." Can it get more stripped down and deconstructionist than that? An angry-girl revenge story. I'm guessing she knows some form of martial arts, and I'm guessing the enemy is some kind of evil corporation or government. Am I right?

"Coming out in 2007: Milla Jovovich will kill an orc to get some pie! Don't miss The Orc and The Pie, based on the shortest AD&D adventure ever!"

I disagree. It definitely had some potential. It managed to squander it fairly impressively, but there was potential there. It couldn't have been a Hudson Hawk or Prayer of the Rollerboys, but it could have been a lot better than Big Momma's House 2.
