I don't get it.

TiVo keeps track of what you watch and then uses that information to record other shows it thinks you might enjoy. That doesn't work quite so well if an evil chicken records programs that make TiVo think you're a senile interior decorator.

I don't think I'd want my TiVo recording programs I didn't tell it to.

Curse those evil chickens, anyway.

The Suggestions feature can be enabled or disabled. Suggestions are deleted before all other programs so it doesn't reduce the amount of space you have for the stuff you actually want. I find it useful to occasionally see shows like News Radio that I don't want to record every instance of (way too many) but wouldn't mind seeing sometimes. It also isn't any harder on the TiVo device since it's always recording 24/7 regardless of the Suggestions feature.

Do they all record constantly, or are you just incredibly gung-ho about it?

All TiVos record constantly. If it isn't currently recording a chosen program then it's just recording whatever's on the current channel and storing it in a thirty minute buffer. The buffer allows pausing and rewinding live tv even if you're just watching whatever's on (and fast forwarding if you're behind real time.) Unfortunately the buffer gets cleared when you switch channels and it can't anticipate switching you might do in the future (yet).
monstersocks doesn't really like the TiVo much because it slows down channel changing (it buffers a few seconds ahead so you have to wait for it to catch up) but I don't mind since I'm almost always watching recorded stuff. She also doesn't like using the program guide that shows the names of programs on each channel. If I'm watching live tv I just pull up the list and go directly to a show instead of going channel by channel examining each and every one.
