Halloween 2008- Captain Hammer
Supposedly you'll be able to keep your cell phone number when switching companies by the end of the year: http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,56675,00.html

aha! thank you!this is just the information i have been looking for. i knew it was coming but i didn't know if it was federal of state-by-state and i didn't know when it was going to be here. this is the only reason i am sticking with my brokenphone (tm). brokenphone has no faceplate! brokenphone sometimes does not bother to ring! brokenphone has blank lines through its display! brokenphone no longer changes volume! i love the fcc when it agrees with me. too bad i have to wait until november to dump at&t and its stupid phones. i wonder if brokenphone can hold out that long.

You're welcome. Hopefully this will actually come to pass this year (as noted in the article it was supposed to have already happened but the wireless providers don't really want to allow it since it will encourage more switching.) I've gotten a new phone number each time I've gotten a new phone (Voicestream to Sprint to T-Mobile) but I haven't worried about it too much since I don't get a whole bunch of calls on my cell phone. It'd be nice to stick with the current number I have from now on though.

my cell phone number is the only number i have. if i were to get a new number, i would not have a backup, i would mostlikely miss out on work. hurry up fcc!
