Cell phone companies fighting to prevent you from keeping your number when you switch companies: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A59524-2003Apr8.html

(This would also allow you to transfer an existing wired telephone number to a wireless phone.)

I'd be much more likely to get a new cell phone if I could keep my number. I wouldn't like having to redistribute my number to everyone. That's a large reason why I haven't gotten a new cell phone. That, and cell phone plans are too confusing for me. And they cost money.

Wow... 24% customer turnover in a year. No wonder the industry doesn't want portability.

Everyone is very interested in getting new customers but they don't seem to care that much about keeping customers. I've had three phones in about four years because after a while I want something new and it's easy to just switch to a new company and get a free phone (after rebates and other pain and suffering.)

That must be why AT&T is flooding me with offers for free phones right now if I reup. My contract just expired.
